Transport fare hike from Oct 18

Kathmandu, September 10.  The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) and the Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs, in a meeting on Tuesday, reached a mutual understanding to hike transport fare from October 18.

Citing that there has been no change in the fare for last one-and-a-half year, transport entrepreneurs were piling pressure on the government to jack up the fare since last few months. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT) has already approved the proposal of the DoTM to increase the fare by maximum seven per cent.

Kashi Raj Dahal, director general of the DoTM told to the Nepalireprter, “Today’s meeting decided to do the necessary homework to implement new fare from October 18,” He added that they will decide the percentage to be increased in charges of cabs and other public vehicles and cargo carriers later, on the basis of MoPIT approval.

However, consumer rights activists have been saying that the fare fixed by the government based on demand of transporter is unrealistic.
