Former PM Koirala cremated



Kathmandu, Feb 10: Nepali Congress president and former Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has been cremated at the Pashupati Aryaghat with state honours and as per the Hindu tradition.

Koirala’s nephews Atul Koirala and Sudhanshu Koirala lit the funeral pyre. A contingent of the Nepalese Army played the last post along with the national song in honour of the late leader. A 13-gun salute was also offered.Before this, Koirala’s mortal remains were brought to Aryaghat, mounted on a specially-decorated truck amidst a funeral procession attended by thousands of mourners.

Party leaders and cadres, security personnel of the Nepalese Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force, party well-wishers and members of the general public in their thousands were in the funeral procession.

The participants of the procession were chanting slogans as ‘Sushil Daiko Abhiyan Shanti ra Sambidhan, Sushil Koirala Amar Rahun, Jai Nepalko Naraley Sambidhan Paye Saraley’ (Sushil dai’s campaign – peace and constitution, Long Live Sushil Koirala, All Got the Constitution with the Slogan of Jai Nepal)’, among others.

The mourners paid tributes by offering flowers on Koirala’s mortal remains. Nepali Congress central members Shashanka Koirala and Shekhar Koirala, Koirala’s personal assistant Atul Koirala and his nephew Ramesh Sharma were on the hearse carrying Koirala’s mortal remains.

The funeral procession went through areas like Tripureshwor, Thapathali, Singha Durbar, Putalisadak and Kamalpokhari before reaching Pashupati to perform Koirala’s last rite.

NC leaders and cadres in and outside Kathmandu and people from different walks of life attended the funeral procession.

NC Dhading leader Badri Aryal remembered Koirala as a democracy leader.
“It will be a true tribute to Koirala, a pioneer in the constitution-writing process, once there is a successful implementation of the constitution,” he said.
