35,000 people die every year in Nepal due to air pollution

BIRATNAGAR, March 10: As many as 35,000 people lose their lives due to air pollution in Nepal every year.

It was shared at a seminar ‘Air Pollution Control’ organized by Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) on Friday.

Various factors resulted in air pollution that has remained a major cause behind the human deaths, it was informed.

Province 1 Chief Govinda Bahadur Tumbahang underscored the need to address all-pervasive problem of air pollution giving high importance than the regional, ethnic, religious and political issue.

NAST Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Jeevraj Pokharel shared that they are setting up pollution measurement center in each province for the control of air pollution.

Likewise, Purbanchal University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ghanashyamlal Das and Biratnagar Metropolis Mayor Bhim Parajuli said that the air pollution triggered menace is rising due to carelessness on part of human life.

Presenting a working paper, NAST Academician Madan Lal Shrestha said that globally air pollution caused lung cancer (36%), heart attack (34%) and other cardiac diseases (27%).

FREE HEALTH TREATMENT
The Nobel Teaching Hospital Biratnagar has provided free of cost treatment worth Rs 54.47 million.

Total 764 patients of low economic status were provided free treatment service of the amount during the past ten months, said Hospital’s Director Dr Rajesh Nepal. The service was provided under Disadvantaged Citizens Treatment Fund, he further shared.
