Constitution Amendment Bill fails to get endorsed

KATHMANDU, Aug 21: The constitution amendment proposal has failed to get endorsed through the parliament as it could not gain two-thirds support in its favor.

The amendment proposal, which was presented at the parliament on Monday, failed to get endorsed after the opposition parties voted against it.

Although, the ruling parties Nepal Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Janta Party Nepal and some other parties had voted in support of the bill, it failed since it was short of 48 votes.

The main opposition party UML, including Kamal Thapa led Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Rastriya Janamorcha and some other smaller parties had voted against the bill. Pashupati Shumsher JB Rana led Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Democratic) was not present during the voting process.

The proposal required 395 votes in support to gain two-thirds majority at the parliament. However, only 347 votes were cast in favor of the amendment proposal, while 206 votes were cast against it.
