PCN urges police not to issue arrest warrant seeking source of any news

KATHMANDU, Jan 8: The Press Council Nepal (PCN) has urged the police not to issue arrest warrant against editors and journalists in the name of seeking source of any news except if it is a criminal case.

The Council urged this after holding discussion with concerned officers of Nepal Police today over the issue after police issued arrest warrant to editors of three online portals regarding publishing the news related to the then Deputy Inspector General of Police and newly elected member of House of Representatives, Nabaraj Silwal.

Acting Chairman of the Council, Kishor Shrestha, said that Chief of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, Senior Superintendent of Police Rabindra Dhanuk and Investigation Officer Bel Bahadur Pandey clarified that as per the Article 19 of the Constitution, police could not send a letter demanding to reveal the source.
