Cold wave affecting prisoners of Jaleshwor jail

Mahottari, Jan 5: Prisoners at the Jaleshwor Jail in Mahottari district have been directly affected due to the thick fog and cold wave in recent period in Tarai-Madhes.

They have been compelled to spend days and nights freezing in the cold as the jail administration has not been providing firewood to them.

Jailer Shovendra Thakur said that they cannot bring firewood from jungle due to the continuous shut down called by the United Democratic Madhesi Forum. Thakur said that they have been bringing firewood under police escorting only for cooking food. The jail now needs 120 quintals of firewood per month to cook food.

A total of 389 prisoners have now been kept at the jail despite its capacity to accommodate 135 people.

Before this, the jail administration had been providing 300 quintals of firewood in three phases to the prisoners to save the prisoners from cold wave in every year.
