Leaders suggest parties to work together for prosperity

KATHMANDU, May 29: Top leaders of various political parties have spoken of the need of all parties to come together for achieving development and prosperity for the country.

The leaders expressed this view while addressing a seminar titled, “Dynamism of the constitution and the role of political parties”, organized on the occasion of the Memorial Day of ‘Father of Democracy’ the late Ganesh Man Singh and establishment of the republic on Tuesday.

The seminar was hosted by an organization named Ganesh Man Singh tatha Jana Aandolan Sahid Smriti Shanti Pratisthan.

Most of the speakers at the seminar stressed on the need of the political parties to stand at one place for the nation’s economic, social and cultural development, arguing that they have been successful in declaring Nepal a republic and bringing new constitution when they worked together.

Nepal Communist Party (NCP) chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ opined that the present government was in the phase of litmus test after the promulgation and implementation of the constitution.

“We are at a new point of political stability. But looking at our trade deficit the situation looks like very worrisome. We need to win the new struggle for attaining economic development and prosperity. We do not in ‘relax’ but are on an ordeal by fire. We need to be successful in this test,” he said.

Recalling that Nepalis have made big sacrifice for establishing the republic, the NCP chair said that although the government has the majority support in parliament there was no alternative to the communists and Nepali Congress working together on national issues including the country’s prosperity.

“The country has won whenever the communists and the Congress have teamed up. We could not cooperate in the time of the first Constituent Assembly and the country suffered. After the earthquake, all the parties came together and the constitution could be promulgated. The republic also became possible as we worked together in cooperation. There is no option for us than to cooperate on issues of national interest and development,” the former Prime Minister noted.

Stating that a wrong publicity has been made that authoritarianism would come when communists came together, he said that  rather than the coming of authoritarianism the unification showed that it is possible for parties sharing the same belief to unify for prosperity and development.

Nepali Congress president and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba suggested to the present government to focus on action rather than speeches in the context of the constitution’s promulgation.

Emphasis should be given to production and attaining self-sufficiency as there is possibility of financial crunch in the long run in operating the federal, provincial and local levels, he added.

Former general secretary of the Nepali Congress Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that the government should work in such fashion that the people will get the feel of republic.

NCP leader and former Speaker Subhash Chandra Nembang said that the government and the political parties needed to work in deference to the public aspirations as the people have already endorsed the leftist alliance (through the general election). RSS
