Thapa’s last rites with state honour today
KATHMANDU, APR 17 : The last rites of former Prime Minister and Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Surya Bahadur Thapa will be performed with state honour at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu on Friday, the government said.
An honour and salute will be bestowed by security personnel at Aryaghat while conducting the last rites. Thapa, 88, died in course of treatment at Medanta Hospital in New Delhi on Wednesday night. He was suffering from cancer.
A Cabinet meeting on Thursday also announced a public holiday for Friday in honour of the late leader who was also the oldest member of the Constituent Assembly. Likewise, national flags will be placed half mast across the country and Nepali missions abroad.
Thapa had served as prime minister for five times–thrice during the Panchayat regime and twice after the establishment of the democracy.
Thapa’s body was brought to the Capital from India on Thursday. According to his party sources, the body will be kept at his Maligaun-based residence on Thursday and will be taken to the Dasharath Stadium for the general public to pay tribute before conducting the last rites in Aryaghat on Friday.
