KATHMANDU, Nov 4: Medical education activist Prof Dr Govinda KC has begun his 17th fast-unto-death in Tufandada, the headquarter of Dadeldhura district, on Monday.

This is his first hunger strike since his retirement from the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital as Senior orthopedic surgeon Oct 14.

Two days after his retirement, Dr KC had warned a fresh hunger strike from Oct 30 if the government failed to address his seven-point demand by Oct 25.

However, he had postponed his hunger strike citing Tihar festival.

His key demands include amendment in the National Medical Education Bill, refunding illegal fees collected by the private medical colleges, free-of-cost medicine to cancer patients, appointment of experts instead of politically affiliated persons in key university and academic positions, and transitional justice bodies.
