9 point pact between UML & UCPN-Maoist would institutionalize impunity: The Human rights defenders

Kathmandu, May 09: The human rights defenders and conflict survivors have demanded the abrogation of the nine-point pact recently signed between the CPN-UML and the Unified CPN (Maoist) arguing that it would institutionalize impunity.

The Conflict Victim and Human Rights Community organizing an interaction program at the Reporters’ Club Nepal on today, they expressed concern that the agreement would protect criminals in the camouflage of politics.

Right activist Charan Prasain has said that the nine-point deal was against human rights while making it clear that the subject would enter into the international jurisdiction if the victims did not get justice as per the apex court verdict, which stated that the reconciliation should be done on conflict survivors’ consent not on arbitration.

Likewise, Senior Advocate Dinesh Tripathi said the two-party agreement would deprive the survivors of access to justice.

Similarly, Conflict Survivors Common Platform Chairperson Suman Adhikari said the consensus forged between the two parties has paved the way for granting amnesty to the criminals.

At the same program, right activist Ram Kumar Bhandari expressed doubt over the functioning of Truth and Reconciliation Commission from now onwards with the agreement.

Youth right activist Fanindra Luitel and Anita Gyawali said that the nine-point deal has inflicted more pain on victims and added that granting amnesty to the perpetrator would in no way be acceptable.

Also speaking on the occasion, advocate Baburam Giri said the agreement was against humanity and warned to initiate a civil movement against it.

Conflict Victims National Committee Chairperson Sabitri Shrestha said the state has compelled conflict victim families to hit the street again in want of justice.
