Garbage collection resumes in Kathmandu



KATHMANDU: March 16: Waste collection which was halted for the last few days in Kathmandu Valley has been resumed from this morning after an agreement between the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and its employees.Collection of garbage resumed from today after Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development, Prakash Man Singh, on Sunday, directed the officials at the Ministry and office-bearers of the KMC and Lalitpur Sub-Metropolis to resolve the problem immediately, said Executive Chief of the KMC, Purna Bhakta Tandukar.

The garbage generated in the Kathmandu Valley was not collected as irate locals of Nuwakot district torched a vehicle belonging to KMC, carrying garbage, on Friday after a child who was hit by a garbage-laden vehicle died.

Employee organisations agreed to collect the garbage after the leadership was ready to address the demand of security of KMC employees.

A total of 550 tonnes of garbage is piled in Kathmandu and 250 tonnes in Lalitpur daily.
