Valentine's Day, Flowers in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, Feb 10: Nepal is importing about 160,000 stems of roses worth Rs 15 million for this year’s Valentine’s Day, according to the Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN). The Valentine’s Day falls on February 14.

“The roses will be imported from Calcutta and Bangalore,” said FAN president Kumar Kasjoo Shrestha. “Importing roses from India rather than other countries will make it cheaper for the buyers,” Shrestha added.

According to him about 200,000 stem roses will be needed this year’s Valentine.

“Our survey yields the demand of 200,000 stem roses. Out of which approximately 1.5 lakh stem roses will be imported from India while the demand for about 50,000 stem roses will be met from internal production,” he said.

FAN’s statistics state that Nepal imported roses worth NPR 12.5 million in 2018 from India. The figure is higher this year due to increased demand. As per FAN’s estimates, out of the 2 lakh rose stems sold on Valentine’s Day, 1.5 lakh rose stems are from India. Of the total demand, 60 per cent of is consumed in Kathmandu valley alone.

Nepali markets see a sale of about 8,000 to 10,000 stems of roses in a single day during the Valentine’s week.

The production of roses is low during this time of the year due to the cold weather.
