KATHMANDU, March 3: Senior communist leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari’s last rite has been performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Sunday afternoon. He was cremated with state honors.

Adhikari daughters Luna, Lima and Lija Adhikari lit the funeral pyre of their father.

Adhikari, 82, passed away at Dhumbarai-based HAMS hospital on Saturday evening. He was admitted to the hospital three weeks ago was suffering from lungs and heart problems.

His spouse Sabita Adhikari, NCP’s general secretary Bishnu Poudel, leader Janardan Sharma and Nepali Congress leader and former finance minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat, former minister Dr Minendra Rijal and several party cadres and leaders reached the Pashupati Aryagaht to pay last tribute to the late leader.

A contingent of the Armed Police Force presented a guard of honor to the late leader. A minute of silence was also observed on the occasion.

Earlier in the morning, the Nepal Communist Party paid final tributes to the mortal remains of Adhikari offering flowers and party flag at the party’s central office in Dhumrabarahi this morning.

Many political leaders and cadres and people had paid last tribute to Adhikari.

The four times finance minister was famous for championing the campaign “Anfo Gaun Afai Banau” (Make your own village) when he was in the 1994-1995 government led by late Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikari. He also introduced senior citizen allowance.

Adhikari had retired from active politics in 2014.

KATHMANDU, March 3: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Chair duo KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ have paid final tributes to the party leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari.

The former deputy prime minister and four times finance minister, who was admitted to hospital three weeks ago after he complained of heart and lungs pain, passed away last night at Dhumbarai-based HAMS hospital. He was 82.

Chairmen Oli and Dahal offered floral tributes and draped the mortal remains of the late leader with party flag at the party’s central office in Dhumrabarahi this morning.

A large number of party leaders and cadres, relatives and as well as ordinary citizens gathered at the office to pay tributes to late leader Adhikari.

His final rites will be held at Pashupati Aryaghat later today, according to the party central office.

Meanwhile, The NCP secretariat meeting has passed a condolence proposal over the demise of late Adhikari.

The meeting has also decided to hoist the party flag at half-mast in all the party offices across the country. Also, a condolence book will be kept at all the offices for three days.

The party has also decided to host a condolence program in Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu on March 7.

KATHMANDU, March 2: Former Deputy Prime Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari has passed away on Saturday evening. He was 82.

The senior communist leader and former finance minister was admitted to Dhumbarai-based HAMS hospital three weeks ago after he complained of heart and lungs pain. He was put on ventilator support for artificial respiration.

His health condition had worsened in the past three days.

According to Dr Pana, Adhikari’s vital organs were not properly working and medicine had been supplied to raise his blood pressure and the urination had stopped for the past 24 hours.

The hospital pronounced him “dead” at 9:35 pm in the evening, according to Dr Bhaskar Raj Panta.

His body will be kept at the central party office of Nepal Communist Party in Dhumbarahi from 9 am to 12 pm for condolence on Sunday, according to NCP leader Krishna Gopal Shrestha.

Adhikari was the first communist finance minister of Nepal. He championed “Afno Gaun Afai Banau” (Make your own village) campaign when he was in the 1994-1995 government led by late Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikari. He also introduced allowance for the senior citizens.

Born at Bhawarpurna in Mahottari district, the four times finance minister was also the member of Constitution Drafting Recommendation Commission on 1990.

Adhikari, who also served as  parliamentary party’s deputy leader, the chief whip of the then CPN-UML, had joined the party in 1955. He had retired from active politics in 2014.
