KATHMANDU, Dec 21: CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center), constituents of the left alliance, will formally begin the unity process from Friday.

A meeting of the party coordination committee of the Left alliance, comprising of senior leaders of both parties, will be held tomorrow which will map concrete plans to materialize the unification process, said Maoist Center leader Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

UML, which emerged as the largest party in the recently concluded federal parliament and province assembly election, has also started discussion today to finalize its agenda for the unification process. The meeting will also discuss the formation of a new government and power-sharing issues, said UML leader and former House Speaker Subash Nembang.

UML will also make its concept clear about the Nation Assembly Election Ordinance, which is pending at the Office of President.

“UML will look for a solution to the row on National Assembly Election through discussion as it is a political matter,” said Nembang.

“It is sad that the government seem disinterested to carry out discussion the ordinance. But, if the government won’t, then as the largest party UML will initiate the discussion,” he added.

UML has accused the Nepali Congress-led government of putting the single transferable vote system for the formation of National Assembly, by evading the parliamentary committee’s decision of majority votes. On the contrary, Nepali Congress has reiterated that it would step down and transfer the power to the left alliance only after electing National Assembly.

Meanwhile, President has urged the political parties to find understanding on the ordinance to National Assembly Election.

KATHMANDU, Nov 15: The CPN-UML has called for ensuring security to the election candidates citing that a series of attacks and threats to its candidates has not stopped.

The UML Central Election Mobilization Committee demanded security to the candidates saying incidents of armed attacks and intimidations against the candidates of the leftist alliance who are into the election campaign for the House of Representatives and State Assembly elections on November 26 and December 7 have increased of late.

“Party’s alternative politburo member and former Minister Sherdhan Rai who is also the candidate for the State Assembly election from Bhojpur district constituency-1 came under an armed attack on the morning of November 14 while the candidate from Sunsari-3 and central member Bhagawati Chaudhari’s family members have received threats of attack,” spokesman of the Committee Bishnu Rimal stated in a press release he issued today.

A serious question has arisen whether the government itself is the mastermind behind these incidents of attacks and threats by making an anonymous party to take responsibility for these attacks directed at obstructing the election campaign, as it has remained a mute spectator, states the press release.

It also said the latest developments show that the government is oriented towards breaching the election code of conduct, spreading the fear of transfer among the government employees and making some ‘unknown’ party to attack the election candidates instead of focusing on conducting the elections in free, fair and fear-free environment. RSS
