KATHMANDU, Aug 4: Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara said that time has come to develop prison as the correction home in order to orient the inmates towards positive thoughts.

During an interaction organized on reform of prison and inmates’ rights on Saturday, Speaker Mahara said the prisons should not be made the enclosure for the inmates to languish with the feeling of humiliation and revenge. “Behavior of the inmates can be changed to encourage them give up criminal mentality,” he said, urging the concerned bodies for the formulation of laws to this regard.

The prison, as he said, could also be developed as the skill development centre. If we take positive steps for it now, achievement of peaceful and civilized society is possible, the Speaker added.

On the occasion, Attorney General Agni Prasad Kharel also said at a time when the prisons were getting crowded, there was no alternative to prison reform.

Former director general of Prison Management Department Krishna Chandra Ghimire made presentation on condition of prison, legal provision and the measures for reform.

There are 72 district prisons in Nepal. Bhaktapur, Bara, Dhanuish, East Nawalparasi and East Rukum have not prisons.

District Judge of Bhaktapur, Dr Shree Prasad Uprety, also made presentation on the rights of inmates and prison reform. RSS

KATHMANDU, June 28: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara today cast his vote at Rolpa Municipality – 1.

Minister Mahara cast the first vote at the Bibamaruk voting center this morning, Personal Secretary Rahul Mahara shared. There are a total of 705 voters in the centre.

The second phase of the local polls is currently underway in Province nos 1,5 and 7. A total of 62,408 candidates are contesting the elections. RSS
