INRUWA, Aug 21: The Sunsari-based Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve has provided compensation to the victim and affected families.

Reserve’s Chief Conservation Officer Shyam Kumar Saha informed that compensation amounting to Rs 11.41 million was handed over to the families reeling under wild animal terror in the fiscal year 2018/19.

Five families who lost their members on animal attacks were provided with Rs 1 million each amounting total Rs 5 million while injured 18 were given a total of Rs 1.34 million. Likewise, Rs 1.96 million was distributed to 194 families whose houses, sheds and food grains were damaged due to animal rampage. Rs 3.1 million was distributed to 461 families whose crops were destroyed, he informed.

INARUWA, May 21: The number of wild buffaloes in Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve, considered a famous habitat for this animal, has increased.

The reserve office gave out this information organizing a press conference at its office in Paschim Kusaha, Sunsari district on Sunday.

The office stated that the number of wild buffaloes in the reserve has reached 441 as per a census conducted a month back.

The office said there are 38 one-year-old calves, 40 two-year-old calves, 35 adolescent, 191 adult female wild buffaloes and 137 adult male wild buffaloes inhabiting the reserve.

It also stated that 83 per cent of the wild buffaloes were living around areas in the east embankment region of the Koshi river while 17 per cent were found living around areas to the west of the Koshi river embankment, Information Officer at the reserve office, Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, said.

Tiwari said, the number of wild buffaloes in the reserve was only 33 in 2032 BS and it has now reached 441. The wild buffaloes are found only in five countries in the world. The wild buffalo population in the reserve was 432 as per a census carried out two years back. RSS

ITAHARI, April 11: Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve began the census of world’s rare species, wild buffalo, from Tuesday.

The census of the species has been undertaken in every two years as per the policy of the Department of Wildlife Preservation. According to the earlier round census, there were total 432 wild buffalo in the Reserve.

Number of wild species might have declined in the Reserve after 13 wild buffaloes were trans-located to Chitwan for protection of its descendants as per the action plan of the Department.

Barhachhetra Municipality Mayor Neelam Khanal and Sunsari Chief District Officer Gopal Prasad Parajuli jointly inaugurated the three-day census of wild buffalo in Koshitappu Wildlife Reserve. RSS

INARUWA, Jan 2: More than 500 domestic and external tourists have visited Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve during in the eve of New Year 2018.

Administrative Chief of the Wildlife Reserve Nabin Adhikari said that 500 plus tourists arrived in the area for visit. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is regarded as one of the key tourist hubs in Province No 1.

The tourists arrived in the area both for picnic and sight-seeing, the officials of Wildlife Reserve said. The tourists from Nepal, India and other countries also arrived in the Wildlife Reserve to visit the museum and for the purpose of bird watching and entertainment, officials said.

The Wildlife Reserve also generated good revenue from the fees charged to the visitors for their entry, it is said.

INARUWA, Oct 6: A total of 11,252 tourists visited the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, one of the renowned tourist destinations in the eastern region in the past one year.

Of them, 11,002 were domestic tourists, 54 from SAARC countries and 196 foreigners visiting the wildlife reserve in fiscal year 2073/074, according to protection officer Shyam Kumar Shah. The highest number of tourists visiting the reserve located in west Kushaha of Koshi rural municipality was in the month of Baisakh and lowest in the month of Poush.

In the same period, the reserve earned 785,100 in revenue collected from the visitors.

The reserve is famous for its collection of wild buffalo and variety of birds.
