KATHMANDU, July 22: Following a dismal performance in the two rounds of local level elections, the Nepali Congress (NC) has started reviewing weakness and causes behind and seeking ways so as to stand strong in future polls.

Discussions have spilled over to the extent that party leaders have started blaming each others for such low performance and sabotaging the party itself through nepotism and favoritism.

The blame game started taking a larger shape, following a poor performance in the recently concluded two phases of the local polls.

At a meeting organized on Saturday at NC central office at Sanepa, party leaders expressed their dissatisfaction at the way the oldest party was being run and its weak performance in the local polls.

They have also discussed ways for the big party in Parliament to come stronger and perform well in future elections especially the third founds of local polls slated in Province 2 for September 18.

The meeting evaluated shortcomings in the way the party’s whole organizational force was mobilized in the polls and discussed ways to come up with strategy for the party to fare well in the next polls, said NC central member Mahesh Acharya.

“We have focused our entire attention to how the party is gradually losing its strength and ways to be adopted for it to stand strong and perform well in next polls,” he said.

Most of the speakers have stressed the need for NC to come together in the days to go by reviewing causes and weakness behind its failure to perform well in the elections.

A total of 20 leaders including senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel put their view at the meeting.

The speakers include central member Bal Bahadur KC, Pharmulla Mansur, Man Bahadur Bishwokarma, Bhishma Raj Angdembe, Aananda Prasad Dhungana, Chandra Bhandari, Kamala Panta, Dhanraj Gurung, Mahendra Yadav, Shankar Bhandari, Min Bishwokarma, leaders Parbata DC Chaudhary, Gururaj Ghimire, Pradip Poudel, Kalyan Kumar Gurung, Ram Krishna Yadav, Debendra Raj Kandel and Sarita Prasain. KATHMANDU, June 25: The silence period for the second phase of local level election slated for June 28 would come into effect from this mid night.

The second phase of election is being held in 35 districts across province no 1, 5 and 7 for 334 local units.
The period come into effect for 48 hours prior to the Election Day and political parties and their candidates are prohibited electioneering, organizing meetings and rallies, chanting slogans and campaigning in any other means after the commencement of the silence period until the end of election, according to the Local Level Election Directives- 2073.

The Election Commission has also urged one and all stakeholders not to take to social media for election related publicity during the period.

Severe action will be taken against those not abiding by the election code of conduct and involving in electioneering during this silence period, according to the Commission. RSS

ILAM, June 19: CPN (UML) senior leader and former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has said that no force can obstruct the second phase of the local level election scheduled for June 28.

Talking to media persons in Ilam district headquarters on Monday, Khanal said there is no reason to postpone the local level elections in the Province 2 and added the polls were postponed due to the loose stands of the government.

“The government showed its meekness before two-four leaders of Madhes. There was no reason to postpone the polls,” Khanal said.

The UML leader also demanded to immediately conduct the third phase of the local level polls in the Province 2.

On the occasion, Khanal claimed that none can stop the UML from emerging the first political force in the country.

NC candidate for the city’s top job, Chiri Babu Maharjan, won with 24,642 votes, according to Chief Election Official, Bal Krishna Dawadi. His closest rival from CPN (UML), Hari Krishna Byanjankar, came as close as 24,316 votes.

In deputy mayor’s post, NC’s Gita Satyal was elected with 19,819 votes. Her closest contender, Shova Shakya, from the Sahja Party received 5,579 votes less. Shakya mustered 14,240 votes. The CPN (UML) and RPP had forged an electoral alliance for the local polls in Lalitpur. RSS

DARKA (DHADING), May 21: The Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) Dhading has called an indefinite general strike in the district to protest a premeditated attack on newly elected chairman of the Jwalamukhi Rural Municipality, Binod Timalsina, along with Nepali Congress’ leaders and cadres.

CPN (UML) cadres are accused of surrounding the NC candidate and cadres when they were having dinner in the evening following a victory rally and physically assaulting them.

The Jwalamukhi Rural Municipality’s newly elected Chair including local Damodar Bhatta, Congress’ district member Narendra Bhatta, General Committee member Yamanath Danai among a dozen NC cadres were injured in the attack.

The strike has forced a closure of educational institutes, industries and businesses across the district. The transportations along other routes apart from the Prithvi Highway have also been disrupted.

Meanwhile, NC District President, Ramesh Dhamala, vowed to capture the culprits before 12 at noon today and make them public at a programme. Security forces have been deployed in heavy numbers at different intersections of the district headquarters to prevent any untoward incidents. RSS

BAGLUNG, May 19: CPN (UML) mayoral candidate, Janak Poudel, has won the election of Baglung Municipality with 11,614 votes.

Poudel’s nearest rival Basanta Kumar Poudel of the Nepali Congress received 9,319 votes.
Similarly, Surendra Khadka of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Deputy-Mayor candidate from CPN (UML), Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Rastriya Janamorcha, has got victorious to the post with 10,522 votes. His closest rival Shakuntala Sharma got 8,734 votes.

The Nepali congress has won the election in ward no 11, 13 and 14.

Similarly, the Nepali Congress has won Mayoral post while CPN (UML) clinched Deputy Mayor post in Jaimini Municipality in the district.

Indra Raj Poudel of the NC has won the election to the post of Deputy Mayor with 5,356 votes. His closest rival, Nar Bahadur Pun of Rastrita Janamorcha received 5,250 votes.

Likewise, Leela Rana of the CPN (UML) got victorious to the post of Deputy Mayor with 4,740 votes. Rana’s nearest rival, Kaushila Devi BK of Nepali Congress received 4,648 votes.
Vote counting of all local-level of Baglung district has been concluded with the result of Jaimini Municipality.

NC has won the election in Jaimini Municipality, Galkot Municipality, Nisikhola Rural Municipality and Tamankhola Rural Municipality while CPN (UML) in Baglung Municipality, Burtibang Municipality, Kathekhola Rural Municipality and Badigaun Rural Municipality. RSS

According to EC sources, this information is as of 10:30 am today.

The election was held for 283 local levels in 34 districts of Province No 3, 4 and 6.

As per the election result, 161 mayors, deputy mayors, chiefs and deputy chiefs of Municipalities and Rural Municipalities, 1,322 ward chairs, 2,192 ward members, 1,095 women members and 1030 dalit women members were elected from these local levels, said EC spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma.

Similarly, Sharma further informed that the election is taking place today at Humla Secondary School voting centre of Kharpunath Rural Municipality. The election was postponed there due to demise of a candidate. RSS
