20 children die after eating free school lunch in India

At least 20 children have died and more are sick after eating free meals at a primary school in eastern India, an official said Wednesday.

Bihar state official Abhijit Sinha said another 27 children and the school cook have been hospitalized in Patna, the state capital. Ten of them are in serious condition. The children are age 8 to 11.

They fell ill soon after eating meals in the school on Tuesday in Masrakh, a village 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Patna. They were rushed to a local hospital and later to the state capital for treatment, Sinha said

The meal was cooked in the school kitchen.

P.K. Sahi, the state education minister, said a preliminary investigation suggests the food had traces of phosphorous, which is used to preserve rice and wheat.

Many state governments in India have launched midday meal programs for poor children. Malnutrition is one of the major health concerns among Indian children.

Bihar state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered an inquiry.

Authorities have suspended a food inspector and registered a case of criminal negligence against the school headmaster.

Woman poisons daughter before consuming self

SAPTARI: A woman in Rajbiraj Municipality in Saptari district poisoned her daughter and killed self too by consuming the poisonous substance, according to police. Pramila Devi Yadav, 30, consumed the poison over a petty family dispute on Wednesday. Police said that the seven-yeatr-old Mausam Kumari is receiving treatment in a hospital and is recovering.

Murderer mother kills poisons daughter before committing suicide

DANG: A mother in Dang district killed her one-year-old daughter by feeding poison before consuming poison self. Sanu Chaudhary, 21, of Sanhewa VDC-2 killed self and her daughter by consuming poison on Sunday night, police said. Police said that the two breathed their last on the way to the Rapti Zonal Hospital, Ghorahi.

Extreme poor couple poisoned self in Mahottari

MAHOTTARI: A couple committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance at Gaushala VDC in Mahottari district on Sunday for their failure to cope with the abject poverty.

It is said that the couple drank pesticide inside the room with the purpose to commit suicide, most probably due to poverty, police said. The deceased are Bisheshwor Chaudarhi, 23, and his spouse Rinku Chaudari (20) according to Area Police Office, Gaushala. Police Inspector Jay Narayan Yadav said that the couple consumed the pesticide at around 2:00 this afternoon, killing themselves.
