KATHMANDU, Feb 24: As Nepali Congress President and the former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is is not willing to give up the position of parliamentary party leader, his main rival faction-led by Ram Chandra Poudel is preparing to pitch Prakashman Singh for the race.

Despite the pressure that Deuba should hand over the leadership to the new leaders, Deuba is in no mood to step back since his has strong command in the 63-member party. His supporters and second-rung leaders favor him to continue the post. Nepali Congress (NC) has 23 lawmakers under the first-past-the-post category and 40 under the proportional representation category.

“Of the total 63, Deuba has support from 39 members,” said a Deuba close source adding, ”Given the comfortable majority, Deuba is in no mood to give up. He has already started consultations to retain his position.”

On the contrary, Poudel faction has maintained that it has 29 lawmakers in its favor, and Poudel is hopeful that he can draw more votes in Singh’s favor due to the increasing rivalries within Deuba faction.

Youth leaders including Gagan Thapa, Chandra Bhandari, Dhanraj Gurung and Pradip Poudel have demanded that the party leadership should be handed to the new generation citing Deuba’s failed leadership which resulted party’s poor performance in recent elections and failure to steer parliamentary affairs in the last five years.

Meanwhile, Singh has already announced that he will contest for the post, declaring himself completely capable and eligible for the post.

Also, party General Secretary Shashank Koirala has said that Deuba should forward his name as the new parliamentary party leader on basis of consensus.

The party has to select the parliamentary party leader before first meeting of the House of Representatives and National Assembly scheduled for March 5. The party has called its first parliamentary party meeting, since the completion of election, for Sunday morning. The party’s PP meeting is expected to decide the date for election of PP leader.

SINDHULI, Feb 23: Nepali Congress (NC) central member Prakashman Singh has said leadership of the NC parliamentary party would be elected only after revisions to its statute.

In his address to a program organized by Nepal Press Union, Sindhuli on Friday, he said a meeting of the parliamentary party scheduled for tomorrow would probably amend the statute and the parliamentary party’s leadership would be chosen only after that.

The former Deputy Prime Minister who represents the NC in the federal parliament from the Kathmandu constituency-1 further claimed that he was competent for becoming the parliamentary leader in the context when no other leader had so far laid claim for the post.

In his personal opinion, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba could not be a new parliamentary leader due to his failure to hold the parliamentary party meeting regularly.

In his response to a query from journalists, he said party general secretary Shashanka Koirala had also expressed his willingness to become the parliamentary leader, but unanimously which seemed not possible.

He took the time to say that if an atmosphere was built not to change the parliamentary leader, he would accept it, otherwise he believed that the leadership should be changed. RSS

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: Nepali Congress leader Prakashman Singh has said the party was eagerly waiting the moment to hand over the government leadership through a due process.

In his address to a program organized in his honor this morning in Baneshwor, Singh who had won the federal parliament seat in the recent election from the Kathmandu-1 said the government would hand over the leadership after going through a process as per the constitution.

He was of the view that the President should not withhold the ordinance related to the National Assembly election. “The NC is not greedy for the power, but wants to leave the government according to a process,” as leader Singh said. He said he was surprised to listen to a ‘lesson of morality’ from those ministers remaining as without portfolio in the NC-led government to the party.

Though the number of electoral seats the party won in the first-past-the-post system in the recent House of Representatives and State Assemblies elections was ‘unexpected’, the Proportional Representation results were satisfactory, he added. RSS
