Ex-PM Thapa to cancer suspected



KATHMANDU, Apr 9: Former Prime minister and senior leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Surya Bahadur Thapa is scheduled to undergo stomach operation in Gurgaon-based Medanta Hospital, his personal secretary Arun Sharma said.

A team comprising Dr Naresh Trehan, Dr RR Kasliwan and Dr Adarsha Chaudhary is scheduled to operate the five-time Nepali prime minister on Friday.

It has been suspected that Thapa suffers from stomach cancer.

Accompanied by his son Sunil Bahadur Thapa, who is Minister for Commerce and Supplies, and a personal doctor, Thapa had left for New Delhi on March 29.

Minister Thapa returned to Kathmandu yesterday. It has been learnt that he is expected to fly to New Delhi tomorrow again.

Other members of the Thapa family are also in New Delhi.

The octogenarian leader suffers from hypertension and heart condition for a long time. He had survived a massive cardiac arrest in June 2012.
