KATHMANDU, Jan 22: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Sunday said the local body elections would be held in the second week of coming May.
He also informed that the poll date would be announced after endorsing election related bills from the Parliament within the fourth week of January.
PM Dahal was launching a book entitled ‘Sansadiya Patrakarita’ (parliamentary journalism) published by Parliamentary Affairs Journalists’ Society in the Capital.
“An agreement has been struck between major political parties to conclude the local body elections by starting it from between May 8 to 13,” he said.
Reminding the ‘agreement’ made between major three political parties to amend the constitution during its promulgation in a bid to bring disgruntled parties onboard, PM Dahal said the government has taken only an initiative to widen the acceptability of the constitutional document trough the amendment.
Also on the occasion, Speaker Onsari Gharti praised major political parties having reached a consensus in relation to holding the elections in the backdrop that there is only one year left to accomplish three levels of elections—local, provincial and federal—as per the constitution.
Commending the role of media in informing public about the activities in parliamentarian affairs, Speaker Gharti termed the media persons reporting on parliamentary affairs as the “honorary members” of the parliament.
On the occasion, Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transportation, Ramesh Lekhak mentioned that the media had interlinked public and the parliament. He also opined that due to the media scrutiny, the parliamentarians’ performance had improved as he further said that they lately came prepared to raise issues for deliberation in the House.
Former Speaker of House and CPN-UML parliamentary party Deputy leader Subash Nembang underscored the need to bring into effect the new constitution by implementing the consensus reached among the major political parties forged before its promulgation.
In attendance at the programme were politicians and media persons, including FNJ former Presidents Bishnu Nisthuri and Shiva Gaunle among others, who talked about various aspects of parliamentary journalism in Nepal.RSS
