KATHMANDU, Dec 14: The Nepalese peacekeeping contingent deployed in Rumbek, Western Lakes, has been awarded the United Nations peacekeeping medal in recognition of their outstanding work in South Sudan.

The medals were awarded by the UNMISS Force Commander, Lt. General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi, and other senior UNMISS officials amid a function on Tuesday, said United Nations Office, Lalitpur.

On behalf of the UN Secretary-General, the Force Commander thanked the government of Nepal for its important contribution and sustained commitment to UN peacekeeping operations around the world.

Since 1958, Nepal has contributed 119,000 peacekeepers to 42 peacekeeping missions.

Currently, 4665 peacekeepers are serving in 14 different missions around the world, making it one of the UN’s largest troop contributing countries.

Lt. General Kamanzi acknowledged the Nepalese troops’ “tremendous effort, courage and commitment” in discharging their duties and responsibilities to the mission.

The UNMISS Head of Field Office, Mr. Kwame Dwamena-Aboagye, senior members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and other UN staff members attended the ceremony.
