Hungry for 24 days: Dr KC’s longest hunger strike
KATHMANDU, July 23: Professor Govinda KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) has been staging indefinite hunger strike for the past 24 days at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
This is the 15th time that Dr KC is on hunger strike demanding reforms in the medical sectors. He has begun his fast-unto-death from June 30.
The ongoing hunger strike breaks the records of his past hunger strike as it is the longest one and the government apathy towards his demands continues.
In his past hunger strikes, Dr KC staged the longest strike of 23 days during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba led government that had begun on August 3, 2017.
Dr KC has staged hunger strike seven times during Nepali Congress-led governments, six times during Communist-led governments and twice during the Khil Raj Regmi led government since 2012.
Dr KC had started staging hunger strikes in July 2012 demanding reforms in the health sector.
DR KC’s supporters have been pressing the government to fulfill Dr KC’s demands and protect his human rights. Various noted figures have organized the protests across the country supporting Dr KC.
