Abidance to journalists’ code of conduct stressed

POKHARA, Aug 2: Journalists have been urged to strictly abide by the code of conduct in order to make the journalism dignified and respectable.

Speakers at an interaction on ‘Journalists Code of Conduct’ organized by Press Council Nepal on Thursday highlighted the crucial role of the code in refining journalism. Federation of Nepali Journalists Kaski chapter coordinated the program.

The speakers suggested journalists to respect the code of ethics and disseminate factual and truth-based news. They also expressed their concern over the decline in credibility of journalism due to the failure to keep to the code of ethics.

Acting president of Press Council Nepal, Kishor Shrestha, said the tendency towards ‘journalism in hurry’ and decline in investigative journalism was the main challenge, stressing on the need to end the increasing anarchy seen in the profession.

He suggested the journalists not become the pawns of any party and to adhere to the code of conduct.

Press Council Nepal’s board member Khila Bahadur Bhandari underlined the need of disseminating quality news for social transformation, urging the media houses to also effectively implement the journalist code.

Nepal Press Institute’s chairman Tirtha Koirala said every journalist should imbibe the responsibility towards society, nation and profession.

FNJ Kaski chapter president Dipendra Shrestha, expert Tikaram Rai, FNJ central member Ram Krishna Gyawali, executive editor of Samadhan national daily, Bharat Koirala, FNJ Kaski chapter secretary Ram Prasad Timilsina, among the speakers underpinned the need for adhering to the journalists’ code of conduct for enhancing the prestige of journalism profession.
