Star Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane under IRD radar for evading taxes
KATHMANDU, NOV 12: Sandeep Lamichhane is by far Nepal’s youngest and most successful cricketer. Recently he brought a house for Nepalese Rupees (NRs) 60 million. He brought this through his earnings from the matches he played.
His eye-catching success has come under the radar of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD). They are now investigating whether he paid his taxes on his earnings and the purchase of his house. The bungalow in Buddhanilkantha of Kathmandu was recently acquired by Lamichhane. According to internal sources, the cricketer has paid less tax as compared to his earnings.
Lamichhane had earned NRs 20 million the previous year, and he has to pay 4 million in taxes. Similarly, there were other income sources where he played for various international leagues where he was paid over United States Dollar (USD) 250,000.
Lamichhane had participated in playing the Bangladesh Premier League, Pakistan, and the Caribbean Premier League. For the Indian Premier League, he has been paid NRs 3.2 million.
With these levels of earnings, it is seen that he has not paid the required amount of tax.
His earnings for this year have been estimated to be over NRs 30 million rupees as he has been selected for additional Australian Big Bash League.
The IRD will be investigating in his earnings, and if found to be evading taxes then the authorities may initiate legal action against him.
