SC to continue hearing Sapkota’s case today

Murder charge against Speaker Agni Sapkota

KATHMANDU, Jan 28: The Supreme Court is continuing the hearing on the writ petition filed against newly elected Speaker Agni Sapkota today as well.

A single bench of justice Sapana Malla Pradhan will continue the hearing, which started on Monday.

Sapkota has been accused of kidnapping and murdering Arjun Lama in Kavrepalanchowk in 2005.

Earlier, advocate Dinesh Tripathi had filed a writ petition at the apex court against Sapkota challenging his candidacy prior to the Speaker’s election on Sunday. In the petition, Tripathi had sought Sapkota’s arrest and prosecution in connection with the murder.

However, the SC postponed the hearing arguing that justice Hari Prasad Phyual, who was scheduled to hear the case, had previously advocated in a case against Sapkota, thus clearing his election to the position unopposed.

He assumed office on Monday.
