Govt decides to register constitution amendment proposal to update Nepal map in national emblem

KATHMANDU, May 22: The government has decided to table a constitution amendment bill at the parliament seeking amendment in Nepal’s map in the national emblem.

A meeting of the Council of Minister held Friday afternoon took the decision.

Nepal on May 18 released its new administrative map incorporating the encroached territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura, after India opened a link road to Mansarovar via Lipulekh.

“Since it is necessary to revise the map of Nepal in the coat-of-arms as per the new Nepal map which incorporates true border of Nepal, we have decided to table a bill that will seek to amend the Schedule 3 of the constitution,” said Government Spokesperson, Communication Minister and Finance Minister Yubaraj Khatiwada told reporters.

India has claimed these territories as its own and has placed these regions inside its border in its new political map.

But Nepal has maintained that these regions fall into Nepal’s territory as per the Sugauli Treaty 1816.
