KATHMANDU: Dhulikhel based Kathmandu University (KU) protesters have signaled continued padlocking of the offices. Stating that their demands have not been met, the padlocking of offices that began on January 1st of the center Dean Office, Office of Control of Examination, Technical Teaching Center (TTC) and the main administration building would continue unabated.

The KU administration had announced an assembly requesting for the protesting KU Professors Association and the Employees’ union to be a part of the meeting where their demands would be discussed. Releasing a joint statement the Director of the Employee’s Union Surendra KC said, “until and unless our demands are not met and a decision not taken to that regard we will continue padlocking the offices”.

On January 1st organizing a joint press conference KU Professors Association and the Employee’s Union said that ” We had requested the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and the Dean to implement the agreement, but they were not attentive toward our demands, and hence we had to take the step of padlocking the offices and going on strike”.

Numerous talks have failed in the past. The Union has said that the KU Act of 2048 is highly discriminatory and that it has to be addressed. There is financial corruption prevalent, and the KU Professors seek permanent employment, incentives, development of the institute, and equal working rules to be implemented by the University.

Dean of the School of Sciences and the Superintendent of KU Dr. Kanhaiya Jha said that ” work cannot progress of the offices continue to be padlocked. There are some drafts to be taken to the Senate meeting. Some demands are legitimate while some are unconstitutional, there is a delay due to mistrust on both sides”.

Dr. Vedmani Dahal the Chairman of the KU Professors Union said, “they have always avoided implementing agreements, and they always are deceptive in their tactics”. It is unlikely that the issues will be resolved although an assembly has been called to address grievances and sort out matters at hand.

REPORTERS CLUB EVENT: Nursing students have admonished authorities of self-immolation outside the Singha Durbar (Administrative Office of Nepal). Due to the orders of the Supreme Court, the college that they were studying in has been terminated leaving their future in darkness.

Organizing a press conference at the Reporters Club yesterday, the students struggle committee has also announced to move forward with protests including self-immolation outside the Singha Durbar if they are ignored. “We are facing grave injustice, and if this continues and no one listens then we will be forced to self immolate” admonished Anushka Chaulagain the coordinator of the struggle committee. Students of Chakrabarti Habi Education Academy College of Health Science in Thimi Kathmandu have been stopped from appearing for their exams due to a court order that terminates the validity of the college.

The students have approached The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) and the Education Ministry but to no avail. Speaking at the press conference Anushka Chaulagain also said that “due to the mistake made by the college the students are paying the unfair price. We will be forced to use harsher methods if the government continues ignoring our pleas” she said.

Speaking at the same program Chairperson of the struggle committee Premika Shahi said that “due to the dispute between CTEVT and the Chakrabarti College the students have to face the brunt of the outcome. The Supreme Court canceled the license of the college on October 21 and when we approached the education ministry the Minister Giriraj Mani Pokharel accused the students instead and provided irresponsible answers to their queries. We were accused of making a mistake on our part” she said.

Shahi further said that “they have been fighting from pillar to post since their college license was canceled”. The students were admitted back in 2018. “A stay order was issued back in July of 2018, but in 2019 the college license was canceled. CTEVT then stopped the students from appearing for their exams. Although they were discussing to resolve the issue, nothing was done to provide a solution.

Although the money that was invested by the students was taken back, the time and effort taken by the students would never come back” said Shahi.

“We are now compelled to take the drastic step of committing suicide, as we have tried all other measures and nothing has been successful. No one has helped us, not even organizations working for the welfare of students, we make an earnest appeal to those organizations to come forward and help us”.

The press conference had all 30 students of the college present to voice their concerns regarding their plight. Some of them were in tears and pleading for justice.

The press release signed by their coordinator Anushka Chaulagain talks about the hardships they have faced and requests those in authority to come forward to help them. They have their dreams shattered, and since they have come from far-flung villages to turn their dreams into reality, the inability to continue with their education has left their future in oblivion. It states that they will be compelled to take their lives if they are ignored. They have faced injustice, and they have no other options left with them.

NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident exposing serious security lapse, students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University were mercilessly attacked last evening.

Over 100 masked hoodlums entered the campus through various entry gates of the University and went on a rampage going from hostel to hostel beating students and vandalizing public property.

Hostels of Sabarmati, Kaveri, and Periyar were attacked while the entire incident is yet to unfold as students come into terms with what has transpired over the evening.

According to reports from various Indian media outlets, masked goons armed with rods, hammers, sticks, and stones wreaked havoc leaving over 20 students grievously injured including faculty members.

(President of JNUSU Aishe Ghosh)

President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student’s Union (JNUSU) Aishe Ghosh who was bleeding profusely from her head after the barbarous attack stated “I have been brutally attacked by goons wearing masks. I have been bleeding. I was brutally beaten up”.

Masked hoodlums fully armed with sticks, rods and hammers were seen damaging property and attacking students inside the campus. “The mob threw huge stones and entered hostels. These were not small stones, these were big stones that could have broken our skulls. I fell on the side and when I came out, I saw cars completely vandalized, including my car” said Professor Atul Sood speaking to NDTV.

At around 6.30 pm last evening from various entry gates, the hoodlums made entry inside the campus. Vice-President of JNUSU Saket Moon said “The police have been on the campus since afternoon, but they have done nothing. The attackers are unknown ABVP goons”.

30 students and 12 faculty members have been injured and are being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

A blame game between the left and the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is ongoing, while the university authorities and the local Delhi Police are also being accused of complicity.

While the ABVP has accused the left of derailing the registration process and internet shutdown on campus, the left has accused the ABVP of unleashing violence on campus using their political power. For over two months, a standoff between the students and the administration is on over the hike in hostel fees. Students say the hike has increased their monthly expenses manifold, and the left-affiliated students have been demanding a rollback.

The JNU administration has justified the hike saying room rent has not been revised in 30 years and they are spending 100 million Indian rupees (INR) per year for payment towards electricity, water, and service charges. The University according to its data fact sheet given on its portal has mentioned aid worth 20 billion INR given by the Government of India (GoI) under the 11th plan.

Home Minister Amit Shah has asked for a report in the entire incident. No arrests have been made so far and none have been identified.

Similarly JNU alumni in the ruling party Cabinet, Minister for External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar and Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman have condemned the incident of violence.

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal has also requested the police to take action and restore peace.

Hundreds of students are now out in the open protesting against the ghastly incident that unfolded last evening. Further action is awaited while social media is abuzz with disappointment and grief. In an institution where academics are the last defense mechanism and the powers of intellect are utilized through debates and discussions, students were unable to defend themselves against the vicious cycle of violence and physical confrontation.

Prolonged uncertainty and education in crisis: Nepal Law Campus cancels L.L.B entrance exam https://nepalireporter.com/2019/12/261044 https://nepalireporter.com/2019/12/261044#respond Sat, 21 Dec 2019 19:53:59 +0000 https://en.reportersnepal.com/?p=261044 KATHMANDU, Dec 22: Nepal Law Campus which under Tribhuvan University faculty of law that had announced entrance examinations for admissions to its law program has been canceled. KATHMANDU, Dec 22: Nepal Law Campus which under Tribhuvan University faculty of law that had announced entrance examinations for admissions to its law program has been canceled. It is uncertain as to whether new dates will be released for entrance exams or will there be direct admission for the LLB course.

Student political wings of various parties had demanded that the law college not limit the seats to 300 and make it open and reachable for the general public. The entrance exams which were to be held on the 21st of December stand canceled putting at risk the education of students who were seeking admission to the law school.

There are very few law colleges in Nepal, and after the federal structure that was implemented most of the colleges are centered on Kathmandu, and Nepal Law Campus is one of the premier campuses under Tribhuvan University. Speaking to Reporters Club there are two versions from the administration and the agitating student bodies regarding the intake of students and campus admission.

(Prof Nabin Kumar Subba Assistant Campus Chief Nepal Law Campus)

The administration has maintained a stance of not being able to admit more than 300 students on the campus due to lack of infrastructure and facilities provided which include student-teacher ratio, facilities for spaces, library, and other activities. Nepal Law Campus has to cater to other students of course of B.A.LLB and LLM. Assistant Campus Chief Prof. Nabin Kumar Subba stated to Nepali Reporter “it is not up to us that we decide what to do, we are an educational institution, and our work is to provide education for those who come here to study with the best available resources. The strike will affect the future of those who wish to take up law, and we hope that we reach an agreement soon”.

The assistant campus chief also spoke on the quality of education for the students if it was declared for over 300 students that would strain the resources of the campus. “Tribhuvan University must look into the matter urgently to resolve the issue,” he said.

(Prof Gyaneshwor Parajuli Assistant Dean Nepal Law Campus)

Similarly speaking to the Assistant Dean of the Campus Prof Gyaneshwor Parajuli, he said “that the matter was being discussed and a committee was also formed regarding the matter. The recommendations of the committee were to provide seats for various law colleges across the country and at par of accommodating students. Nepal Law Campus currently can admit only 300 which is a maximum class size for the announced LLB course”. The assistant dean further warned that randomly increasing numbers for admissions would weaken the quality of education due to the student-teacher ratio and the increasing class size along with the limited space available in the campus”.

(Padlocked office inside Nepal Law Campus)

The agitating student bodies comprise mostly of the ruling party and its coalition. Speaking to the President of the ruling Nepali Communist Party student wing Deepak Thapa is vehement in his stance of the lockdown. “The administration here has admitted numerous students if you look at the intake of the previous years. Why are they keeping a limit which would disallow people from marginalized and economically weaker sections of the society from seeking admission into the law program? Don’t they have a right to education? If you look at the previous year’s this law college has admitted over 1000 students each time, there is no problem as there are different times and classes for the courses along with available faculty. Along with that they also demand a better method of admissions for those seeking entry into the campus. President Thapa of the student wing says that “we have been speaking to the administration regarding our concern of limiting seats which is unnecessary, education is a fundamental right, and unlike previous years the admission has to be open to all. Limiting seats in public institutions like these will hamper the future of the students who are keen on studying law as part of their career”.

A student leader of the same party Surendra Pun says that “this is a ploy to increase private colleges and generate profit. We have been speaking to the administration regarding our demands and we are hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon he said over the phone to Nepali Reporter.

The discussion with both the student leaders revealed that there is indeed a vast monetary difference between public and private institutions, while a three year LLB program costs about Nepalese Rupees (NRs) 25000, a private college can charge anywhere from NRs 350,000 to Nrs 500,000 for the three-year course. The latter would be out of reach for many students who are from the economically weaker sections.

As deliberations continue, the future of those who have applied for the law courses from the previous year remains uncertain. A prolonged crisis of this magnitude would leave thousands of students in jeopardy leading to students having to take up private education or move abroad. The administration and the student bodies, however, are said to come to a decisive conclusion and resume admissions for the coming academic year.
