KATHMANDU, Feb 10: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader Haribol Gajurel has clarified that the conflicting stands from the two co-chairs has not created divisions in the ruling party.

The contradictory opinions from Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli over the United States intervention on Venezuela political crisis soured relations in the ruling party at a time when the unification process is yet to complete.

Following the US decision to give recognition to Juan Guaido—who on January 23 proclaimed himself as the interim president setting up a tense standoff with current president Nicolas Maduro– as the leader of Venezuela, Dahal issued a press statement denouncing the moves of the US and its allies as “unacceptable intrusion in internal affairs and an attempt of imperialist coup’.

Dahal’s statement prompted the US to inquire whether the statement from the ruling party’s chair was the official position of the Nepal government.

However, PM Oli, in a television interview, termed Dahal’s statement a ‘slip’, saying this would not have happened if he was in the country. Oli was then in the Davos of Switzerland attending the 49th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (held from January 22 to 25).

PM Oli’s comment rocked the ruling party, which in May last year announced unification after the merger of CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center), creating a wide rift within the party—even dividing the former UML and Maoist leaders.

The differences intensified when Dahal on Friday warned of another fresh protest if anyone tries to undermine Maoism.

“PM Oli and Chair Dahal’s opinion on Venezuela political crisis and US intervention contradicted. But it has not created a debate in the party,” said Gajurel talking to Reporters’ Club Nepal President Rishi Dhamala at a radio program Nepali Bahas.

“The party secretariat meeting has already issued a press release in this regard backing Dahal’s statement. Therefore, it won’t be a big problem,” he clarified.

Oli and Dahal have held a series of meeting to resolve the differences over their positions.

Gajurel clarified that Dahal statement was not an intended effort to fail Chair Oli.

KATHMANDU, June 4: The ruling party CPN (Maoist Center) leader Haribol Gajurel has argued that despite Maoist Center (MC)’s successful stay at the government, their defeat in the local level election was due to their own weakness.

“The works done in MC’s leadership were satisfactory. However, in the local level election, the results didn’t come in our favor. We could not win as much seats as we expected. It is because we were unable to press the right information to the people,” said Gajurel.

“Also, another reason for loss is the failure in polling alliance,” he added.

MC were able to garner only 16 percent votes in the first phase of local level election and leader Gajurel expects his party to emerge victorious in at least 20 percent of local levels. However, he accepts that his party was not so successful and the results were unexpected.

“The result has given MC some serious thoughts. We are carrying out debate and discussion regarding such results.”

He further said that MC became weak as they failed to form organizations after their unification with smaller other Maoist parties. “The organization could not function for six months. Also, we were unable to deliver message down to the lower level.”

SARLAHI: The Madhes bureau in-charge of the UCPN (Maoist) Haribol Gajurel was warned of non-existence of Nepal’s hardliner political party’s chief Mohan Baidhya if the latter does not comes for party unification with the UCPN (Maoist).

“Baidhyaji will face similar fate to Mohan Bikram Singh if he does not return to the main former party,” Gajurel said at a press conference in Hariwon of Sarhali today. Gajurel, a trusted lieutenant of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said people have been closely watching the position of Mohan Bikram Singh adding that Baidhya also will face similar status if he goes ahead single-handedly.

He also opined that Baidhya has no option to go for party unification with the UCPN (Maoist).

On the occasion, Gajurel also revealed that the UML defector Ram Chandra Jha would be given a crucial position in party’s organization in Madhes.

Gajurel also said that the UCPN (Maoist) would win more than 60 seats in first past the post electoral system from Abadh, Mithila and Bhojpura States—the core regions of Madhes.

KATHMANDU: Recent uproar within the nation for prosecuting war-era human rights abuse and trial of Nepal Army colonel in London seems to have pressurized Nepal’s ruling Maoist to form Transitional Justice Mechanisms at the earliest.

Their urgency for the such mechanisms became evident after its party leadership tried to bargain the government leadership for the formation of such mechanisms and trying all cases on the basis of laws that the Bhattarai government had proposed in the TJM Bill presently under the President’s consideration.

UCPN Maoist leader Haribol Gajurel said that the delay in the formation of the TJM has been hindering the activities of his party and party leaders and said that the mechanisms should be formed without any further delays while speaking at an interaction program organized by the Reporters Club Nepal on Tuesday.

During the program presided by Reporters Club Nepal’s president Rishi Dhamala, Gajurel said that his party was ready to finalize all war era incidents of human rights and violence through the TJM.

While trying to console the concerns of rights organizations that claim that the TJM bill has tried to provide blanket amnesty to war crimes, he said that all issues of war-era violence that occurred as per the party’s policy should be considered for reconciliation efforts and other incidents that were not directed by the party should be executed as per existing laws.

The Maoist’s leaders statement comes at a time when major political parties are trying to forge consensus on forming an electoral government in the leadership of Chief Justice Khilaraj Regmi.

Till Monday, parties had cleared all contentions in the package deal for Regmi led government that included the date of the CA elections, number of constituencies, tenure of the CA, authority of the electoral government and the political mechanisms to be formed to support the electoral government.

However they failed to form electoral government after UCPN Maoist stressed on including the TJM in the package deal. However the proposal has been resisted by the opposition parties and derailed the consensus garnering efforts between political parties.

Gajurel took the credit on his party’s behalf for foiling the consensus talks by raising the issue of TJM and said that his party wont agree to the terms of the opposition to step down from government unless their demand of TJM formation and Madheshi Morcha’s demand of citizenship is resolved.

Along with that he also credited international power sources for foiling the consensus talks.
