KATHMANDU, March 26: 24 people were injured when a bus met with an accident at Chalnakhel this morning.

The bus (Na 3 Kha 1444), which was en route to Kathmandu from Pharping, skidded on the muddy road and somersaulted at Hattiban, Chalnakhel at 7 am in the morning, according to the police. The passenger bus operated on the Pharping – Old Bus Park route.

Among those injured, 12 are being treated at the Manmohan Hospital Swoyambhu and 12 at Vayodha Hospital, Balkhu.

Meanwhile, three people sustained injuries when a mini-bus fell into the Trishuli river from the Prithvi Highway at Ghoptebhir of Icchakamana rural municipality-4 in Chitwan district. The mishap occurred on Monday night.

The District Police Office, Chitwan said the bus (Na 5 Kha 3682) fell 200 meters down from the road on the side of the Trishuli river at 10 pm on Monday. The mini-bus was going towards Kurintar from Muglin.

Among the injured, the condition of Nishan Pariyar of around 25 years from Damauli, Tanahun district is said to be critical. He is undergoing treatment at Purnao Medical College Bharatpur.

KATHMANDU, Feb 24: The Independent Transport Workers Association of Nepal (ITWAN) is to impart training to 48,000 drivers and their helpers of public vehicles with an objective of reducing the number of road accidents.

“We will impart training to drivers and assistant drivers of all provinces about road discipline and traffic rules, which will help reduce road accidents,” ITWAN Chair Bhim Jwala Rai said adding that they are launching this campaign in a view that about six to seven people lost their lives in road accident every day.

The association has mobilized all its organizations across the nation for the campaign. The organization will paste stickers reading ‘I’m a responsible transport worker’, I do not use mobile phone while driving’ and ‘I follow traffic rules’ in all public vehicles under the campaign.

Similarly, the ITWAN would organize health camp for transport workers, where they could undergo blood pressure, diabetes, eye checkup and kidney test free of cost.

According to Chief of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, Basanta Panta, around 2,500 to 3,000 people lose their lives in road accidents every year.

Panta said the campaign would be fruitful to reduce the road accidents.
Similarly, 3.2 million vehicles are now in operation across the country while 900,000 are in Kathmandu Valley alone, according to the Department of Transport Management.

A youth motorcyclist died when a truck with Indian registration number UP32CZ9063 hit a motorcycle (Ba 50 Pa 9471) at Darechowk on the Narayangadh-Kurintar road section of Chitwan this morning.

Dicijan Pariyar, 28, of Anbukhaireni, Tananu district died in the accident. Pillion rider Arjun Shrestha has sustained serious injuries.

Likewise, a pedestrian died after being knocked down by a bus at Ayodhyanagar in Siraha district this morning. The identity of the deceased of around 40 years is yet to be known, said Police Inspector Naresh Raj Subedi. The bus (Lu 1 Kha 6661) heading for Dharan from Kathmandu knocked the man down and he died on the spot, said police.

Sapkota died while undergoing treatment at Birtamod-based Kanchanjangha Hospital and Limbu at Manmohan Hospital, said police. The accident took place when a bus (Me 1 Kha 1298) heading towards Kakadvitta from Damak overturned after being out of control, said Sub Inspector Madan Mainali.

The dead bodies have not been identified yet, police said. The condition of the three among the injured in the incident is critical, according to Kul Bahadur Saud, Sub-Inspector at Area Police Office, Krishnapur.

Fourteen among the injured are undergoing treatment in Padma Hospital at Attariya while critically injured three are undergoing treatment at Mahakali Zonal Hospital, Mahendranagar, said Sub Inspector Saud.

The bus (Na 3 Kha 1195) heading towards Dhangadhi from Mahendranagar met with an accident while the bus tried to save a pedestrian at around 10:45 am.

Police said that the tanker (Na 4 Kha 3264) was transporting 20,000 litre of petrol to Kathmandu from Amlekhgunj. 

The accident took place after the vehicle fell 250 meters off the road in Trishuli River, said police. 

The deceased are tanker driver Gopal Singh Lama of Hetauda Municipality and helpers Suresh Lama and Prakash Bista of Nibuwatar-6 Makawanpur, Police Inspector Lok Bahadur Gurung said. 

Bodies of helpers Lama and Bista have been completely burnt while the body of driver Lama has been taken to Bharatpur for postmortem.

Police said investigations into the incidents are underway.

Of the injured, the condition of 50-year-old Bhagyamani Neupane of Tandi VDC-9, Sindhuli district, is said to be critical, the Area Police Office, Bardibas stated.

The bus (Na 3 Kha 7969) carrying some 35 passengers veered off the road and overturned in the wee hours of morning, police said.

The bus was heading towards Sindhuli from Kathmandu.

Similarly, two persons died and 13 were injured in a road accident on the East-West highway here at Haripur VDC in Sunsari on Sunday night.

The deceased are Krishna Bahadur Limbu (28) of Aangsarang VDC and a woman, whose name and address are yet to be verified.

The accident took place when a bus (Na. 2 Kha. 7724) heading to east from west smashed with a truck (Na. 2 Kha. 9779) head-on, said District Police Office Sunsari.

The critically injured are being treated at Biratnagar-based Neuro Hospital, and those with minor injuries have returned home after receiving first aid treatment, said police.

Police identified the deceased as Purna Bahadur BK, 47, and Sukaram Chaudhary, 50, of Bhandara VDC. The police said BK and Chaudhary died while receiving treatment in Bharatpur.

Similarly, motorcyclist Shashi Darai, 30, of Kathar VDC died after a motorcycle collided with a parked tractor at Khairahani-5 in the district. Seriously injured Santosh Lama is receiving treatment in Bharatpur.
