Kathmandu: Nepali Congress president Sushil Koirala has expressed his confidence that his party would garner two-third majority in the upcoming CA polls claiming that the nationwide wave was in favour of Nepali Congress akin to the first election of 2015 BS.
Speaking at a face-to-face interaction programme organised by the Reporters Club Nepal today, NC president Koirala said, “Nepali Congress has garnered two-third majority in 1990 BS while there was peaceful polls in the country. This time also there is wave of support in favour of the NC. If the polls are held in peaceful way, NC will sweep the election with two-third majority.”
Koirala also urged the CPN-Maoist to make its poll boycott programme peaceful as it has pledged. He ruled out the possibility of consensus with the poll-opposing CPN-Maoist arguing that it has not budged from its previous stands and have not changed the demands also. Stating that the country has already jumped into the election fray, he ruled out the postponement of November 19 polls as demanded by the CPN-Maoist led 33-party alliance.
He said: “Peoples have already jumped into the election process. Election is not going to defer. It should be held. Election should not be postponed even If I die. Election is not going to be affected due to anybody’s death. Baidya je should immediately stop his party’s anti poll activities.”
Koirala, however, opined that CPN-Maoist could be brought in the constitution drafting process. “Congress will take initiation towards that,” he added.
Koirala took an exception on the remarks by the UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal that the Baidya led CPN-Maoist could be provided 26 seats on the CA through the cabinet of the appointment.
“CPN-Maoist could have won more seats than 26 seats,” said Koirala. Citing the example of Pakistan where the voter turnout was 60 per cent despite cases of violence, he said that the situation in Nepal was better than Pakistan and there would be encouraging participation of the voters in polls. Koirala said that people were more excited to vote. “They will catch the election disruptors if denied to caste vote and hand over them to the Police themselves,” said Koirala.  According to Koirala, security was not the big challenge for the polls and sporadic cases of violence would not affect the polls. “People will boycott those who boycott the polls,” Koirala asserted.
Condemning the attack on UCPN (Maoist) chairman Dahal in Kailali, Koirala revealed that there were threats to him also before going Bardiya to address the election gathering. Indicating to the speculations that the UCPN (Maoist) was going to buy the votes, he said: “People now do not trade their votes with money. Even they get the money they will accept it but they will vote as per their own choice. The election results of those buying the votes will be adverse to them. ” Koirala said that his party was the poorest party, and added, “We will go to the people with our ideology and commitment.”
Koirala said that the current change in the country was the result of the policy formulated by BP Koirala and Girija Prashad Koirala. He claimed that the people will cast their vote to the NC for the development of the country.
