EC not prepared for CA polls in June
KATHMANDU: Despite political parties’ pressure for holding the elections in June, Nepal’s Election Commission (EC) has drawn a conclusion that the upcoming CA elections were not possible in June due to political powers’ sharp division in some crucial issues including that of 1 percent threshold for political parties’ representation to ensure their seats under the proportional electoral system in upcoming CA.
A meeting of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Commissioners held today concluded that political and technical environments for elections were not prepared to hold the polls in June.
Similarly, lack of election related laws, disruption in biometric voters’ list collection, distribution of citizenships and others are likely to be the major obstacles for holding the polls in June the Election Commissioners agreed, it is said.
The Commissioners have also forged consensus to expedite internal preparations to hold the elections in mid October to mid November, it is learnt.
