Koirala says Regmi should quit CJ’s post if required
KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has opined that the Chairman of Interim Election Council (IEC) should step down as Chief Justice if required to ensure inclusive Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.
Koirala’s statement comes at a time when dissenting political parties including the Mohan Baidya led CPN Maoist have denied to take part in the CA elections demanding dissolution of the Regmi-led government among other 12 conditions.
Speaking at a program in Illam on Friday Koirala said that his party had accepted the formation of government in Regmi’s leadership to remove the Bhattarai led government and added that his party would take any measure to ensure inclusive CA election.
He urged Regmi to step down to create conducive environment for holding the CA elections in November.
” All political parties should participate in the CA elections. As some political parties have protested the dual role of Regmi, he should be ready to quit CJ’s post,” Koirala said adding, ” he should not become a barrier for consensus.”
