BP’s death anniversary being marked today

KATHMANDU: The 31st death anniversary of Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala, the proponent of the country’s democracy movement, is being commemorated today as the BP Memorial Day throughout the country.
Popularly known as BP, Nepal’s first elected Prime Minister and a champion of democracy, he passed away on July 21, 1982.

A fighter of the 1949 revolution, the late BP struggled during his entire life for the establishment of the multi-party democracy and socialism in the country. He returned home from exile in India in 1976 under the National Unity and Reconciliation Policy, citing that the nationality was under threat.

The movement to overthrow the Panchayat polity in 1979 gained momentum after BP’s return from exile in India.

Besides leaving a mark in politics, the late BP Koirala has also carved a niche in the field of literature. He has many acclaimed books and novels to his credit.
