Major ruling party mechanism go for army mobilization

KATHMANDU: The High Level Political Committee (HLPC) on Monday has formally asked the government to pave way for mobilizing Nepal Army (NA) during Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

A meeting of the HLPC today asked the government to make necessary amendments in the Interim Constitution for NA mobilization during the CA elections slated for November 19.

The decision has paved way for the government to amend Article 158 of the Interim Constitution to legitimise army mobilsation during the polls.

Furthermore the meeting also urged the dissenting 33 political parties led by the CPN Maoist to forge consensus and to participate in the upcoming CA elections.

Following the formal request sent by the HLPC, the government is reported to be preparing for presenting a proposal on the same to President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav later today after holding a cabinet meeting.

Present constitutional provisions restrict the mobilization of national army without parliamentary hearing. But since the parliament is not in place, the President will address the issue through a Presidential order.
