Statute not possible on Jan 22, only draft: NC leader Upadhyay

Kathmandu, Jan 05 . Nepali Congress (NC) leader Deep Kumar Upadhyay has said that the new constitution cannot be promulgated on January 22 at any cost. He opined that a preliminary draft can be issued on that date and promulgate the new constitution on May 29.

Speaking at the  interaction programme organised by the Reporters’ Club Nepal on Monday, leader Upadhyay said the political parties are moving closer to agreement on forms of government, judiciary and electoral system. He hoped that a draft of the constitution could be issued on January 22 as only the demarcation of federal states remains to be agreed.

Speaking at the program presided by the Club’s President Rishi Dhamala, NC leader said that the 10-state model floated by the UCPN (Maoist)-led alliance is positive step that would help in forging consensus among political parties.

He said, “This proposal is positive. It will create a favorable political environment to forge consensus. We are ready to hold discussions on this proposal.”
