Bhaktapur at high risk of filariasis

BHAKTAPUR, March 6:  Bhaktapur district is at high risk of filariasis as the efforts to control the disease were found ineffective.

The government’s efforts turned futile though it started the anti-filariasis campaign, distributing medicines to people with the disease free of cost for the last six years.

Talking to journalists at a press conference organised by the District Public Health Office (DPHO), Bhaktapur today, Senior Public Health Officer Dinesh Kumar Chapagain said in spite of the government’s efforts to control the disease, even the urban areas of the district are at high risk of filariasis as local residents refuse to use the medicine.

It is stated that only 20 per cent of the people in the Bhaktapur Municipality have taken the medicine.

The DPHO has a target of administering medicine to 291,208 people against the filariasis. It is scheduled to distribute the medicine for three days on March 14, 15 and 16.
