46 killed‚ 100 injured in Yemen suicide attacks

ADEN, YEMEN, March 20: Yemeni medical officials say at least 46 people were killed and more than 100 injured when three suicide bombers attacked two mosques controlled by Shiite rebels in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

The Friday attacks targeted the mosques of Badr in southern Sanaa and al-Hashoosh in the northern part of the capital. The attacks are the first large-scale bombings to target mosques frequented by both Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

The Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, swept down from their northern strongholds and seized the capital in September.

Yemen is home to what is considered the world’s most dangerous and active off-shoot of al-Qaida.
