Construction of barrage over Saptakoshi river at Chatara necessary: Minister Yadav



Itahari, Dec 18: Minister for Irrigation, Umesh Yadav, has laid emphasis on the need of constructing a barrage over Saptakoshi river at Chatara to provide irrigation facilities to farmers.

Minister Yadav said so in course of visiting and inquiring about current situation of Sunsari-Morang Irrigation Project. Some 68,000 hectares of land of Sunsari and Morang districts has been getting irrigation facilities from Saptakoshi river.

He further said construction of a barrage has become necessary even for building an irrigation canal to provide irrigation facilities in Udayapur, Saptari and Siraha districts.

Stressing that construction task of barrage on the Koshi river at Chatara would be initiated soon considering it as the project of national pride, the Irrigation Minister directed the Department of Water Resources to carry out its feasibility study soon.

Responding to a query, Minister Yadav said that the construction of the barrage was necessary for us as it was indispensible for the farmers.

On the occasion, Director General at the Department, Madhav Belbase, said that the construction of the barrage within the next five years was necessary even after investing around Rs 7 million to feed the water of the Sunsari-Morang irrigation project to the main canal. RSS
