Will not quit govt; Home minister Basnet

Surunga (Jhapa), Jan 29: Home Minister Shakti Bahadur Basnet today said that the first priority of the government is to make society peaceful, prosperous and better governed.

Speaking at a press conference held by Jhapa branch of Revolutionary Journalists’ Association in Jhapa’s Birtamod, he said that it would be impossible to develop the nation lacking peace, prosperity and good governance, adding that so the government concentrated on the matter at present. On a different note, the minister viewed that there was no relevancy of the ongoing Madhes protest as most of the demands of protesting Madhes-based political parties were addressed through the amendment to the constitution.

He said that the issue of boundary delineation raised by the agitating parties would be sorted out through a political mechanism to be formed in this regard.

He also said that the obstructed border points would be opened in some days, thus helping ease smooth supply of goods into Nepal and the black marketeering prevailing taking advantage of Indian unofficial border blockade would end.

When asked about reports about his party quitting the government, minister Basnet, also UCPN (Maoist) leader, dismissed the reports as rumours. He instead said that efforts were underway to make the government effective.
