Speaker Gharti calls for consensus

Kathmandu, May 1: The major political parties have expressed the commitment to forge a consensus in the drafting of the parliamentary regulations by this evening.

Speaking at a meeting held at the office of Speaker Onsari Ghari this afternoon, the senior leaders of the parties responded positively to the call for a consensus from the speaker. “The leaders have committed to give a way out, let’s hope we have a consensus on it”, Speaker Gharti said.

The parties are reportedly yet to agree on the number of members of the parliamentary hearing committee, with the NC proposing 73 members while the ruling UML and UCPN-M for 15. The drafting of the regulations remains stalled since the past eight months for lack of a consensus.

Following the meeting, UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed the confidence of reaching to a consensus soon. “The NC has assured us of coming to an agreement, we will hopefully have an agreement soon”, he said.

Also present at the meeting were Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and President of the main opposition Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba. The regulations drafting committee is scheduled to meet on Monday. RSS
