Real Madrid receives a taste of their own medicine

Madrid 40 unbeaten run ends

SEVILLA, Jan 16: Real Madrid received a taste of their own medicine as their unbeaten run came to an end courtesy of two late Sevilla goals.

Sergio Ramos, who had been jeered and targetted bythe home fans at the Sanchez Pizjuan all night, scored an own goal to cancel out a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty before Stevan Jovetic scored a dramatic winner.

Zinedine Zidane’s side’s unbeaten streak finished at 40 games, then, although they still have an advantage in the league.

They remain one point clear of Sevilla, who are second, and two points clear of Barcelona. In addition, they have a game in hand on their two title rivals.

Madrid came into the game having knocked Sevilla out of the Copa del Rey on Thursday. Zidane opted for three at the back and they had to put up with a lot of pressure in an intense first half.

The breakthrough eventually came from the away side in the second half. Dani Carvajal burst into the area and was ruled to have been fouled by goalkeeper Sergio Rico, with Ronaldo scoring from the spot.

It looked like Madrid would keep their impressive streak going as the game headed into the final five minutes, but there was late drama at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

First of all Ramos, who angered his former club’s supporters on Thursday with the way he celebrated scoring a Panenka penalty, headed into his own net in the 85th minute.

And with the game stretched from end-to-end, Sevilla won it in added time when Jovetic curled home from outside the area on his La Liga debut. AGENCIES
