Dr Govinda KC begins 12th fast-unto-death

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Dr Govinda KC has begun his 12th fast-unto-death from Monday demanding reforms in the medical education.

Dr. KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, organizing a press conference at the hospital, announced his indefinite hunger strike claiming that the lawmakers of the parliament is likely to endorse the new Medical Education Act with the influence of medical mafias.

“The House is likely to endorse Medical Education Act is endorsed going against the previous agreements, which is clearly influenced by the medical mafias. If the Act is endorsed it will not only institutionalize the influence of mafias in medical sector but also will lose all the achievements made gained from all our previous campaign so far,” said Dr KC.

Only, last month Dr KC withdrew his 11th fast-unto-death citing that the country was in emergency situations due to devastating floods and landslides in the Terai region.  

“The government is trying to endorse the Health Profession Education Bill by excluding some of the important points of Mathema Commission Report,” accused KC.

He has also demanded that the all the bodies charge medical education fees meeting the terms of government-proposed fee structure.

KC has also asked for further investigation into the irregularities of multi-million rupees by Gopal Bahadur Khadka while procuring land in different parts of the country for building fuel storage facility, and take necessary legal action against him. He further demanded immediate suspension of the officers who assisted Khadka in NOC land deal scam.
