One killed in police firing in Jhapa

JHAPA, Oct 27: A person was killed as police opened fire at the protesters in Birtamod, Jhapa on Friday. The deceased has been identified as NareshThapa, 30, of Arjundhara Municipality. Thapa was pronounced dead on the way to Mechi Zonal Hospital.

Similarly, six others were also injured in the same incident. The injured —Sunil Pathak of Rajgadh-8, Ashok Basnet of Mechinagar-9, Nabaraj Koirala of Durgapur, Punya Prasad Luintel of Arjundhara-6, Mani Nepali of Ilammai Municipality and Debanand Rajbanshi of Birtamod-6 are undergoing treatment at B&C Hospital, Biratnagar.
On the other hand, thirty-two police personnel including Superintendent of Police of Armed Police Force, Ramesh Kumar Subedi, Police Inspector of Area Police Office, Birtamod, Gyan Bahadur Bista were injured when the demonstrators pelted stones over them.

Police had fired 17 rounds after the protesters had defied the imposed curfew. The situation has remained tensed in Birtamod following a clash between locals and the police.  The clash erupted when the police intervened in peaceful rally organized by the local people demanding action against the murderer of the 11-year old Laxman Shiwakoti.
