Indefinite curfew imposed in Dhankuta

KATHMANDU, Jan 18: District Administration Dhankuta has imposed indefinite curfew in the district headquarter after the protesters vandalized and torched the local administration office, land revenue office and other government office in protest against the government’s decision to declare Dhankuta as the temporary province capitals of Province 1. The protestors have been demanding their home town be declared as province capitals.

The situation went out of control after the local and police clashed during the protest, according to Prem Prakash Upreti.

Upreti said that the prohibitory order started from 11:30 am from Bihibare Haat in the East, Ghumaune Chautara in the West, Debrebas to Public Service Commission office in the North and Patale Khola in the South of the district.

The locals had also pelted stones at ambulances and fire engine of Dhankuta municipality. Police had lobbed dozens of tear gas and baton charged the protestors to control the situation. At least seven are said to have sustained injuries during the clash.

Meanwhile, the local administration has beefed security to maintain law and order in the district.
