KATHMANDU, Jan 29: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed another corruption case against the suspended Director General of Inland Revenue Department, Chudamani Sharma at the Supreme Court on Monday.

A CIAA board meeting held on Thursday had decided to file a fresh case against Sharma accusing him, along with his wife Kalpana Upreti Sharma, of amassing properties worth Rs 43 million through illegal means.

CIAA in a statement said that Sharma could reveal the legitimate source of income of around Rs 36 million from the time he joined government service till December 2016 even as investigations have revealed that he spent around Rs 79 million during the period.

Sharma was suspended after the anti-graft body arrested him on June last year accusing him of embezzling money from state coffers. He was released on Rs 3 billion bail later that month. Later in July, CIAA filed a graft case against Sharma and two other officials of Tax Settlement Commission charging them of misappropriating revenues worth Rs 10.02 billion- largest corruption scandal in Nepal’s history.

But, the Supreme Court on August had released Sharma on a general date. The case is still sub-judice at the Court.

Sharma is absconding and have failed to present himself at the CIAA office.
