National Assembly election concluded peacefully: EC

KATHMANDU, Feb 6: The National Assembly (NA) elections concluded peacefully nationwide today, the Election Commission said.

According to the EC, final results of the election took place on the basis of single transferable vote system, are likely to come by tomorrow morning. The EC has already sent a team of experts to six provinces to conduct the vote counts.

The National Assembly, the Upper House of federal parliament, has 59 members. Out of them, 56 members are elected by the Electoral College at the rate of eight members, including at least three women, one dalit and one person from among the disabled or minority communities, from each province. The President nominates three members including at least one woman to the National Assembly at the recommendation of the government.

The election was held only in six provinces today as all the NA members from Province-2 have been elected unopposed before this, according to Election Commissioner Ishwari Prasad Poudel. Voting took place from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Twenty four members have already been elected unopposed from all the provinces. Fifty-two candidates are in the race for remaining 32 seats in the National Assembly in the election today.

A total of 1,677 people including 1,234 local level officials and 443 State Assembly members were eligible to vote in the election.

The polling stations were set up at the public places near to the Office of the Chief Returning Officer in Biratnagar (Province 1), Patan, Lalitpur (Province 3), Pokhara (Province 4), Dang (Province 5), Surkhet (Province 6) and Doti (Province 7).
