KATHMANDU, Feb 15: The political parties represented in the parliament have forged consensus to hold the election to the post of the President on March 5.

CPN-UML leader Rajendra Pandey said that agreement to conduct the polls for the election to the President on March 5 was reached at a meeting organized by the Election Commission (EC).

Likewise, the EC said that detail discussions were held with the representatives of political parties regarding the date announcement for the elections to the President and Vice President, preparations to the polls, forming a mechanism for political dialogues.

EC spokesperson Nabaraj Dhakal said that the EC would announce the date for the election to hold polls after holding discussions with the stakeholders.

In today’s meeting, the leaders of the political parties seconded the EC’s proposal for the elections to the President and Vice President.

Dhakal said that an electoral college comprising members of the House of Representative and Province Assemblies would be eligible for the election to the President and the weightage of Members of the House of Representative would be 79 while Province Assemblies members shall carry 48.

As per the constitutional provision, the President and the Vice President shall be of different sex or community. RSS
