KATHMANDU, May 31: SSP Shyam Khatri, a major suspect of the 33 kg gold smuggling case and murder of carrier Sanam Shakya has surrendered himself before the Morang District Court on Thursday. Khatri had been absconding since a special investigation team summoned him a few days ago.

The police have already arrested racketeer Chudamani Upreti ‘Gore’ in connection with the multiple gold smugglings and Shakya murder case.

Gore, who was arrested on May 22 from Gaurighat, Kathmandu, in his statement has insisted that he was only an agent and SSP Khatri could reveal more information about the case.

According to sources, SSP Khatri would take Rs 50,000 per kilo to help the racketeers smuggle gold.

Khatri had been arrested in connection to another 33kg gold smuggling case, being brought from Dubai to Tribhuvan International Airport on January 5, 2017. He was later released on March 17, 2017 after depositing a bail bond of Rs200,000 following an order by Kathmandu District Court judge Dipendra Adhikari.

The court will record Khatri’s statement today itself, according to sources.

The District Police Office has registered a case with the court against 63 suspects including Khatri in the scam. Other 31 accused are still on the run.
