World Environment Day to be marked as mega campaign throughout year
KATHMANDU, June 2: The government is marking the World Environment Day as a mega campaign throughout the year and not only being limited to ritual programs.
The Ministry of Forest and Environment is marking the environment day as a mega campaign by laying high emphasis on the prevention of pollution in urban areas including Kathmandu Valley, management of waste and sanitation and plantation of tree.
The government has incorporated the campaign for environment in its annual policy and program and budget. The World Environment Day falls on June 5 every year.
Addressing a program on environment conservation organized on Saturday by Policy Research and Advocacy Hub, Minister for Forest and Environment Shakti Bahadur Basnet has said that the environmental day should be celebrated throughout the year.
“The environmental protection campaign should be tailored keeping in mind the geographical reality and practical aspects rather not imitating foreign measures”, he added.
Also speaking on the occasion, conservationist Dr Dharmaraj Uprety suggested adopting new policy for the forest management while noting that the pollution has increasingly troubled daily life in major urban areas of Nepal.
Environment expert Dr Rabin Malla and Dr Rajan Thapa also suggested change in the policy.
Host organization chair Raj Shahi said that emphasis should be laid on the development of physical infrastructure and conservation of forest and environment.
Also present on the occasion were former minister and parliamentarian Satya Pahadi and RSS general manager Opendra Sharma. RSS
